Suspect Located in New Year's Murder

UPDATED WITH VIDEO January 3, 5:59 p.m.
The man Springfield police said is responsible for a murder on New Year's Day is behind bars in Colorado.

Police said Jodeci Commer, 20, made it across state lines, but they would not say how, or what he was doing when he was captured. They did say it was U.S. Marshals who took him into custody without a struggle.

Commer is facing several charges, including first-degree murder, in connection with the shooting death of DeShawn Jones, 24. Jones was gunned down on his front porch on East Cedar Street around 5 a.m. New Year's Day.

Police said after the crime, Commer tried to escape, but because of a tight network of law enforcement, he wasn't walking free for long.

"They can find you anywhere, and it's a valuable asset to have," Springfield Police Deputy Chief Cliff Buscher said. "We have a great working relationship with them. Like I told you, one of our officers is actually on the task force for Illinois here, and they're excellent. We use them all the time."

Police are now working with the state's attorney's office to figure out if and when Commer will be extradited back to Illinois.

As for the victim, an autopsy was conducted today. The coroner found Jones died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Commer also faces charges for aggravated discharge of a firearm and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Police said Commer and Jones were involved in some sort of fight before the shots rang out.

UPDATED January 3, 12:34 p.m.

The man suspected of gunning down a Springfield man on his front porch on New Year's Day has been found by U.S. Marshals in Denver.

Jodeci Commer is wanted for first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. Those charges are in connection with the shooting death of DeShawn Jones.

Jones was shot and killed on a front porch at 1924 E. Cedar St. around 5 a.m. Tuesday. Crime scene investigators spent New Year's Day combing the area for evidence, even taking molds of footprints in the snow.

An autopsy for Jones is scheduled for today.
