Honey Show Buzzes Into State Fair
Each year, the Illinois Honey Show hosts its annual competition at the state fairgrounds. Beekeepers from all across the state battle for the best in honey-made products, from traditional honey to art designs in beeswax.
Superintendent Larry Roth said this year's honey supply is lower compared to years past, due to the changing weather.
"Let's say you have a real wet fall and a real wet spring, and then a real dry summer," Roth said. "You get lots of honey. But if it rains all the time like it did this year, the honey flow is sporadic: on, off, on, off, on, off. So it didn't give us very much honey this year."
Locally-made honey is sold in the Illinois Building at the state fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There, you can get a variety of honey-made products, including the Illinois Beekeepers Association's homemade honey ice cream.
