Fewer Tornadoes Than Usual in Illinois
The number of tornadoes in Illinois is down this year. So far, weather experts say, there have been 20 tornadoes in the state--a third of what's usually expected.

State climatologist Jim Angel said the trend is nationwide. He said the wet spring and dry summer may be the reason for lower-than-typical numbers.

"Usually what we have is one or two days where the conditions are just perfect to have a tornado outbreak," Angel said. "Then the rest of the season could be relatively calm. And this year, we never had that. We kind of missed out on that."

All but seven of the tornadoes were in northern Illinois. Two touched down in central Illinois, while two others were recorded in southern Illinois. Three were in the Metro East. Fewer Tornadoes Than Usual in Illinois
