Teacher-Student Sex: The Long-Term Impact
The latest secret revealed from Lanphier High School is adding fuel to the fire.
“Another parent brought a student from Lanphier in that allegedly was having sex with the teacher,” Deputy Chief Cliff Buscher of the Springfield Police Department said.
While police investigate, the community is reacting.
“It's just awful that we've now had... I mean it was awful to have one child affected and now to hear that there's a second is very distressing,” Susan White, District 186 School Board President, said.
Both of the victims are 17-year-old boys.
“It's kind of a double standard in our society that a 17-year-old boy with an older woman somehow isn't a victim when we would still see a 17-year-old girl with an older male as a victim,” Christine Lindsey, assistant director of Sangamon County Child Advocacy Center, said.
The agency counsels children who are victims of sexual assault. Though Lindsey has not met either of the two teens accusing teacher Jennifer Tyree, she explained in general how students can be impacted by a sexual relationship with an educator.
”Typically kids who are sexually abused struggle with self-esteem issues, some fearfulness about intimate relationships, even with friends, loss of trust,” she said.
With both teens, Tyree is accused of using her position to gain trust. It’s something both teens could struggle with long-term.
“She's in a position of trust and authority by being their school teacher or even being a teacher and not their teacher,” Lindsey said.
Now or later, that loss of trust does impact victims, bleeding onto other pages of their lives.Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:32 PM CDT
